“Having previously used our own home as a holiday let, we wanted something bespoke for the garden, and that’s how we found Red Sky. Paul came and helped us from the start, ensuring our site was going to work. With his advice we installed plumbing, sewage, and electrics whilst our hut was being designed and built.

“Paul and Adam were incredible throughout the design phase. We had some idea of what we wanted, but they were able to guide us in ways we hadn’t considered. We also wanted an unconventional layout, placing our kitchenette opposite the window, meaning Adam and Paul could design custom cabinets above this. Storage solutions are so important in a holiday let, and Red Sky were able to satisfy our every request. It was a really collaborative process.

“It was hugely successful from day one. We thought it would calm down over the winter months but we significantly underestimated, with 10 bookings in November alone. In our first year of being open we’ve managed to make back our landscaping costs, and in the next three seasons we’re projecting to completely pay off our full investment of the shepherd’s hut and hot tub.

“Running costs are minimal, with a small electric bill and a slightly larger water bill (due to our hot tub, whose water we use on the garden so nothing goes to waste). We provide some local groceries for our guests and launder and clean the hut ourselves.

“Ultimately the quality of our Red Sky hut is evident, and it means we’re able to market it as a luxury retreat. Whilst there’s novelty in staying in a shepherd’s hut, what we’ve been able to create with full amenities means our reviews are flourishing. Over our first season we’ve achieved an average of 4.8/5 stars, which is fantastic as we clearly want our guests to have the best stay possible, but that also led to us receiving a Customers' Choice of 2024 award by Cottages.com.”

“As well as our shepherd’s hut we have two holiday let properties on our farm. The combined cost of renovation for those was five times that of our shepherd’s hut and its landscaping, and we’re able to charge the same nightly rate for both. As such, the shepherd’s hut is by far our best investment and has achieved the best return. Plus, you can move with it, it’s much more flexible.

“Paul was extremely helpful not only during the build but also prior. He came to our site and advised on the best placement for our hut, where our guests would get the most out of it and how it would work best for us. His advice was priceless.

“I always try and stop by our guests before they leave, and the feedback is always wonderful. People love the wood burner and manage to easily work all the appliances. Even through winter we had almost every weekend booked, and seeing our guests with a cup of coffee in hand leaning out the stable door, that’s what it’s all about for them. I like to say, away from it all but still in touch.”
